Walk up to any dispensary counter and you'll see the same categories: flower, pre-rolls, vapes, concentrates, edibles. Here's what each one actually is, in plain language, so the menu makes sense before you ever reach the counter.
Flower.
Flower is the plant itself, dried and cured. It's the classic form: you grind it, roll it, or pack it, and you smoke it. Effects from inhaling are typically felt within minutes and taper over a few hours. Potency is listed as a THC percentage on every label in New Mexico, so you can compare one jar to the next at a glance.
Pre-rolls.
A pre-roll is flower that has been ground and rolled for you. Nothing added, nothing required: no grinder, no papers, no learning curve. It's the simplest way to try a specific strain, and it's why pre-rolls are the most common first purchase we see.
Vapes.
Vape cartridges contain cannabis oil that is heated, not burned. They're discreet, portable, and dose-controllable in small puffs. Onset is fast, like flower. Pay attention to two things on the label: the oil type and the THC percentage, which typically runs much higher than flower.
Concentrates.
Concentrates are extracted cannabis: wax, shatter, rosin, live resin. This is the high-potency end of the menu, often two to four times the strength of flower, and it usually requires its own equipment. If you're new, this is the category to ask about rather than guess at. It's built for experienced consumers.
Edibles.
Edibles are eaten, not inhaled, and that changes everything about timing. Onset commonly takes 30 minutes to 2 hours because they're processed through digestion, and effects last considerably longer than smoking. This is why every budtender in America repeats the same sentence: start low, go slow. In New Mexico, edibles are dosed in labeled milligram servings, so you always know exactly what one piece contains.
The honest answer about which is right for you.
There isn't a universal one. It depends on your experience, your setting, and what you're comfortable with. That's what the counter conversation is for. Come in, tell us where you're starting from, and we'll walk the menu with you. No rush, no jargon, no judgment.
